Peter Adriance 1947-2025

A Founder of IEF
Former IEF board member

The International Environment Forum has lost one of its founding members and key supporters for many years, Peter Adriance. Peter, while Representative for Sustainable Development at the U.S. Bahá’í Office of Public Affairs, was a piller of IEF in its early years, serving on the Governing Board, helping to organise its conferences, and contributing substantively to its work. He was an inspiration for many of us.

Peter McLeod Adriance was 78 when he passed away in Montreal, Canada, on 7 November 2025, after a long illness. Born on 28 September 1947 in Albany, New York, he devoted his life to service, faith, and the pursuit of a more just and sustainable world.

Peter earned a B.A. from Alfred University and an M.B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After beginning his career in business administration and marketing, he dedicated more than 25 years to public service as the Representative for Sustainable Development at the U.S. Bahá’í Office of Public Affairs. In this role, he worked to advance environmental stewardship and foster cooperation among faith communities, civil society, and governments around the world.

Peter Adriance

A devoted member of the Bahá’í Faith, Peter was guided by its principles of unity, compassion, and service. He served in numerous voluntary and leadership roles within the Bahá’í community and was active in neighbourhood organising for civic causes, including environmental conservation and racial justice.

Peter Adriance

Peter found joy in gardening, nature, good food, and gatherings with family and friends. He had an exceptional gift for connection—whether with lifelong friends or perfect strangers—and was known for his warmth, empathy, and genuine interest in others. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a mentor and father figure to many beyond his own family. Peter will be remembered above all for his steadfast faith, moral clarity, and deep kindness—qualities that shaped both his family and his lifelong service to humanity.

Some of Peter's papers are available on the IEF website:

The Earth Charter: Personal Reflections on the Baha'i Role in its Development, presented at the
2nd IEF Conference, 6-8 November, 1998, De Poort, The Netherlands.

Reflections on the Earth Charter: An Earth Charter Update, presented at the 3rd IEF Conference, organized jointly with the Bahá'í Agency for Social and Economic Development - United Kingdom (BASED-UK)
15-18 August 1999, Sidcot, United Kingdom.

Spiritual Principles for Sustainable Development, a brief talk prior to the 15th annual IEF conference, at the Bahá'í Center of Learning, Hobart, Tasmania, 9 December 2011.

A Brief History of Bahá'í involvement in Environmental Issues, a keynote address at the
IEF 15th Annual Conference in Hobart, Tasmania (Australia), 11 December 2011.
